Surrounding the unfortunate deaths of black men and black women across the nation, Melanin Ain't A Crime was conceptualized in 2016.
Krystal Jackson (founder) being a wife to a black man and parent of two children, one being a son, realized how racism, discrimination, and profiling was and is still an ongoing issue, even in present day. With the growing number of hashtags listing names of men and women of color, her concern grew greater for the safety of her own family, particularly the men. While lying down on the couch watching the news about yet another officer gunning down another black male, she asked herself - "Can I Live?". She became frustrated and yelled "Melanin Ain't A Crime!"
The purpose of Melanin Ain't A Crime is to spark conversation and promote awareness about our culture and how we are perceived.
